Javier Cavazos, DPM, FACPM, FFPM RCPS (Glasg.)

Dr. G. Javier Cavazos, Jr. was born and raised in the Rio Grande Valley in South Texas. He earned his B.S. degree from the University of Notre Dame (1990) and his Doctor in Podiatric Medicine from the Dr. William M. Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine at Rosalind Franklin University (1994). Dr. Cavazos completed his residency training at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, where he received specialized training in the management and treatment of the Diabetic Foot. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Podiatric Medicine and serves on the Board of Directors for the American College of Podiatric Medicine (ACPM). In 2020, Dr. Cavazos was inducted into the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons (Glasgow) and in 2022, he became the first Mexican American podiatrist to serve as President for the American College of Podiatric Medicine.

While at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio (UTHSCSA), Dr. Cavazos was involved with the patient care that led to the development of “The University of Texas Classification for Diabetic Foot Wounds” and “The University of Texas at Risk Diabetic Foot Classification System”. His interest and training in the management of the diabetic foot led him back home to the Rio Grande Valley (RGV) to provide specialized podiatric services to an underserved, diabetes afflicted population. Dr. Cavazos founded RGV Footcare, P.A., in 1996, and dedicated his career to educating patients, colleagues, residents, students, and healthcare business associates on diseases and injury of the foot and ankle. Being a native of the Rio Grande Valley, he has firsthand knowledge of the devastating effects of diabetes on a Hispanic community and is most proud of the positive impact his practice and patient care provided for the RGV.

Dr. Cavazos retired from private practice in 2020 and transitioned into academic medicine. He is currently the Assistant Dean of Curriculum and Clinical Education at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) School of Podiatric Medicine and appointed as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Podiatric Medicine, Surgery, and Biomechanics.
